Week 3 - Reading with Hardye pupils

This week we had a real treat when a group of Thomas Hardye students came to visit us in our classroom to run a literacy based workshop. The text they chose for Beech Class was Aliens Love Underpants which fitted with our space theme and made the children laugh. Having been read the story the children then had to design and colour a pair of underpants on an alien and then describe them and name their alien. They also played a game of 'Alien says' (instead of Simon says!).  The Hardye's students then showed them some alien gloop which is a liquid when picked up but solid if you hit it hard........ very peculiar! They also mixed various household ingredients to create different coloured liquids and make them fizz. A lot of fun was had by everyone including being able to play outside with them all at playtime.

We ended the day with a whole school assembly when the students talked about their favourite books from when they were young, these included Going on a Bear Hunt, Winnie the Witch and Harry Potter.  They have also left the children with a competition for each year group and we hope that some of the students will return in March or April to see how the children have got on.

In maths this week year 1 have started working on numbers and place value to 50 while year 2 have focused on division.

We also had a very sad goodbye to say as Mrs Sanders left us on Wednesday to start a new job at The Studio School. She has been an amazing member of staff and will be hugely missed by all of the children and adults at Winterbourne. Thank you Mrs Sanders for all your hard work over the last three and a half years and good luck in your new role!
