Week 13 - Science and gardening

In science the children have been learning about different materials and experimenting to find waterproof ones. But when learning about the suitability of materials to perform a job, it is also important to take into account how long they last for and whether or not they could be harmful to the environment.

The children had lots of pictures of different items e.g. plastic bags, leather shoes, banana skin, vegetables, hairspray bottle, plastic bottle caps etc. They had to estimate how long these items would take to decompose. It was a really interesting exercise to find that toilet paper takes a week but a hairspray bottle takes 500 years!

Another thing to take into consideration when deciding what to make something out of.

The children also did an amazing job weeding and sorting out our veg bed, replanting the bulbs, thinning the strawberries so we are ready to put some seeds in when we come back after the holidays. I'm hoping there are plenty of green fingers between us all.

In literacy we have worked on the story of The Three Little Pigs and a modern alternative The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. We have also been reading some of Roald Dahls revolting rhymes based on traditional tales.

Have a wonderful break over Easter. Hopefully the sun will shine.
